Practical experience in the lab, dealing with matlab and simulation-based optimization are essential for engineers. The module Applied Chemical Process Engineering offers an interactive insight into methods of designing and operating a chemical reactor, based on the master course Chemical Process Engineering.

The practical course helps you to learn and expand your skills in laboratory work by determining reaction rate parameters with experimental data gained from a ‚lab on a chip' reactor. The measurement data is analyzed by a self-made MATLAB script and thereafter verified with a CFD simulation, implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics.

You learn how to interpret chemical reactors and train your skills in pairs with intensive supervision. In the end, you will be able to evaluate reaction kinetics in a tube reactor and reproduce your observations by CFD simulations. The ability to predict significant mass transfer processes will help you to estimate their impact on the chemical reactions taking place. After the course, you will be familiar with MATLAB and COMSOL and confident in solving existing engineering problems.

The module is concluded and evaluated by a report and presentation.
