The amount of sustainable fuels and chemicals produced from lignocellulosic biomass (e.g. straw, wood) has increased during the last decades, as it is not competing with food and feeding stuff. From the three main constituents of biomass (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin), the utilization of lignin is particularly challenging due to its complex structure and association with other parts of the cell wall. Therefore, the accurate analysis of lignin is of great importance for a more efficient use of lignocellulosic biomass.
Different liquid chromatography techniques (GPC, LC & IC) are commonly used for separation, identification and quantification of lignin fragments. The information gained from those techniques might help to find suitable applications for lignin.

Your tasks:

  • Alkaline, acid and/or organic solvent based isolation of lignin from wood
  • Development and comparison of chromatographic methods in combination with mass spectrometry detection for separation and identification of lignin fragments
